Castor Canadensis

At the scavenger hunt: Going down this trail, you will see many fenced trees. These are put up to prevent beavers from using all of the trees in the area for their dams.

Identification:

  • Can be found in freshwater by dams or on land while foraging

  • Identifiable by their big teeth and flat tail

Species status:

  • IUCN Red List: Least Concern

  • Not an Ontario Species at Risk

Future effects of climate change:

  • Could help reduce flooding with dams

  • Could worsen droughts with dams

  • Could contribute to mass tree loss

How to help lessen the effects of beaver activity:

  • Wrap fence around certain trees at risk

  • Installing flow pipes by areas with many dams

  • Become involved in tree planting
